The morning belongs to Bamberg. Cross the Obere Brücke to the Altes Rathaus — a town hall built defiantly on an artificial island in the middle of the river. Wander through the Cathedral's Romanesque aisles, then drift along Little Venice's half-timbered riverfront. At 15:00, we hit the road to Berlin; arrive around 19:00 for a relaxed evening near the hotel.

The Bebelplatz is surrounded by the State Opera, Old Library and St. Hedwig's Cathedral. When Verdi's choruses swell across the square on a warm May evening, it becomes the kind of moment that defines a journey. This is what travel is for.
